TOBI AMUSAN FIRST NIGERIAN ATHLETE TO WIN THE WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD
Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan popularly known as ‘Tobi Amusan’
brought Nigeria, Africa, and the world to a standstill as she emerged the Winner of the world athletics championship gold with a new world record of 12.12 sec in the semi-final and 12.30 sec to defend her commonwealth gold award.
WHO IS TOBI AMUSAN?
Tobi Amusan is an athlete who specializes in a 100-meter hurdle and also competes as a sprinter.
She was born on the 23rd of April 1997 according to the date she’s 25 years old (2022)
She was born in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, and also hails from the above mentioned, she’s the third child of the family.
With a height of 1.56m (5ft 1In)’
Weight 57kg (126 Ib)’
Tobi Amusan started her career at a very early age, reports have it that she would sneak out of the house for training at the stadium leaving her Mom to cover up for her, as her Dad was not in full support of her interest in sports.
Her Mom always supported her baby girl at every given chance to make her dreams reality.
Her parents are school teachers and were also athletes as her Dad played volleyball games and her Mom was a sprinter in her University days. You would agree with me that Tobi’s discipline and sports traits were from her parents.

Tobi bagged a scholarship to study at the University of Texas El Paso. Where she furthered her studies and also joined the El Paso UTEP. She was popular for her constant wins and her first was in the hurdles in 2016 with a finishing time of 12.83 sec at the El Paso UTEP invitational.

Tobi Amusan is a self-motivated young lady whose ready to achieve whatever goal she sets to smash. It was found on Twitter on November 8, 2016, where she wrote
“Unknown now but 🔜 I will be UNFORGOTTEN… I will persist until I SUCCEED”
She was determined, persistent, hardworking, and never toyed with her training time.

Amusan entered the 2022 World Athletics Championships as a medal contender after back-to-back 4th place finishes. In the heats she ran an African record of 12.40s, bettering her old record by 0.01s. In the semifinal, she set a new world record of 12.12s. She bested her time once again in the final, running 12.06s (2.5 m/s wind assisted, thus not a legal WR), becoming the first Nigerian world champion at the World Athletics Championships.
- At the 2022 Commonwealth games, she won her second consecutive gold medal in the 100m hurdles by setting a new games record of 12.30s thereby defending her title. She also helped power Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m relay team to a Gold medal.
