On #WorldEarthDay2024, the streets of Calabar buzzed with the energy and commitment of volunteers dedicated to a cleaner planet. Led by Sct. Omojefe Kennedy Orezime, affectionately known as Dr. PUSH, the founder of Transformation Home Africa, this year’s Earth Day activities included a street cleanup and market sensitization campaign under the powerful theme “Planet vs. Plastic.”
A Journey of Awareness and Action
The event kicked off at the main gate of the University of Calabar, weaving through Etta Agbor Street and Akim Road, culminating at Akim Market. Along this route, Dr. PUSH and his dedicated team engaged with community members, highlighting the critical dangers of plastic pollution and the vital importance of managing plastic waste.
The Dangers of Plastic Pollution
- 🌊 Harm to Marine Life: Plastic pollution poses a severe threat to marine animals, often entangling and killing them.
- 🐢 Long Decomposition Period: Plastic can take hundreds of years to decompose, presenting a persistent and growing environmental threat.
- ☠️ Chemical Contamination: Plastic waste can leach harmful chemicals into the soil and water, contaminating the food chain and posing health risks.
The Importance of Managing Plastic Waste
- ♻️ Recycling: Effective recycling programs reduce the volume of plastic waste ending up in landfills and oceans.
- 🚫 Reducing Single-Use Plastics: Minimizing the use of single-use plastics is essential to prevent plastic pollution at its source.
- 🚯 Proper Waste Disposal: Ensuring proper disposal methods keeps our communities clean and safeguards the environment.
