ESCAPE PLAN – MY ESCAPE ROUTE FINALLY OPENED
As the lanky guy came into the room with my dinner, he found me sprawled on the flaw like a lifeless body.
On hearing his footsteps, I’d lie down and pretended to be dead. I breathed shallowly so that my chest wouldn’t expand and contract visibly. As expected, he quickly dropped the tray and ran to where I lay, leaving the door unlocked.
He felt my pulse to ascertain if there was any life left in me, and that was my chance. There was no weapon in the room so I had to be innovative if I was to escape in one piece.

Without further ado, I sprang swiftly, grabbed him by the neck and held on to it, choking him. He struggled to let out a shout but I held on tightly and mercilessly, without availing him an opportunity to react.
His furious hand movements soon petered down to more mourning, but I didn’t let go. Soon, he was asleep and unconscious. I let go of him there and then, knowing that any further pressure may kill him. I didn’t want anyone’s blood on my hands.
I quickly stood to my feet and rushed towards the door. My foot still hurt, but it was bearable. At least I could run with it. On getting to the door, I stopped and listened for movements. On ascertaining there was none, I opened the door and took to my heels. I got outside and realized the small building was surrounded by bushes.

It was my first time out in the open in weeks and so I contemplated where to run to. There was thick darkness and grave silence about the place. Not even the sound of vehicles was heard from where I stood except those from crickets. Probably no one was home, but the lanky guy that came to deliver my dinner.
With the new knowledge, I heaved a sigh of relief. I just hope he’s not dead, I reasoned. Where was I? I asked myself, but there was no time to answer that. So, I ran into the bushes and kept pressing forward, not knowing where I was headed.

I kept pressing deep till I got to the main road. Luckily for me, a car was approaching a little distance away. Without hesitation, I ran into the middle of the road, and waved at it. As luck would have it, it halted few feet away from me and I limped towards it, already appreciating the driver for halting when I realized what had happened.
It was James and some other guys. They appeared to have been back from somewhere. There was this deadly look on his face as he spoke.
“Guy what did I tell you?” he asked, stepping out of the car furiously, along with the rest. “What the hell did I tell you, man?” he thundered, his eyes bloodshot.

I made to reply, but the punch was so sudden and landed right on my temple. I tumbled back and fell to the ground, but more came as they started kicking, some punching. I felt this would be the end, and that they’d probably waste me after the beatings. But after some time, James stopped them and commanded I should be put in the car. This they did, with a couple of slaps.
I was back to square one. Maybe even worse, for I’d lost my only chance and my escape plan was thrown to the gutters.
