Barcelona Femeni who were crowned champions of Primera Iberdrola last week has again been crowned the champions of Europe following a 4:0 victory against Chelsea Women.
The tone of the game was set inside a minute when Lieke Martens smashed an effort against the crossbar before Melanie Leupolz inadvertently looped the ball into her own net to gift Barcelona the opening goal. A goal Chelsea never recovered from.
Leupolz was penalised again soon after following a foul on Jennifer Hermoso inside the area. Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas then fired home from the penalty spot to double Barcelona’s lead inside 12 minutes.
The Spanish side soon took matters into their own hands as they continued to overpower Chelsea, with Aitana Bonmati (21) and Caroline Graham Hansen (36) both scoring from close range to ultimately secure their maiden Champions League title.
The four goals meant the game was all but wrapped up by half-time. Chelsea did improve after the break but did not create too many moments of danger in the Barca penalty area and couldn’t beat Sandro Panos in the Barca goal.
Barca continued to threaten and had the ball in the back of the net again late on through substitute Asisat Oshoala but saw it disallowed for offside. The Nigerian National has again created record in Nigerian Female Football and Africa at large. The Super Falcon captain is on her way to becoming African Women Football of the year for the 5th time in a role.
Asisat who scored the only goal for Barcelona Femeni in the Champions League 2018/2019 season where they lost 4:1 to Lyon has finally lay hands on the trophy.
It didn’t matter for Oshoala and the Barcelona Femeni Team that the goal was disallowed because moments later the final whistle blew and Barca were crowned European champions for the very first time.
