It was the wedding after-party of one of her close friends from university days.
Yet again, another one of her friend has fallen in love and married the love of her life, but she’s still here, single to stupor. She walked over to the bar to get something strong to drown her thoughts; as the whole wedding stuff weighs on her.
“Hi, do you have something strong like Madeira?” She asked the bartender
“Yes ma’am I do”
“Alright, I’ll like a glass for starters”
(Another wedding song was blaring from the speakers)
“Okay ma’am, how about you sir?” The bartender said to another young man that had also come up to the bar.
She hadn’t noticed his presence because she was lost in her thoughts, even as she conversed with the bartender.
“I’ll have what the young lady is having,” said the man.
She looked at him and scoffed before sitting on the bar-stool. He smirked at her reaction and sat down.
He turned to her and spoke, “Hi miss, you seem a little upset that I ordered your type of wine” he tried to start a conversation.
“I’m not interested in talking, let’s just sit and have our drinks in peace, thank you”. He shrugged and looked away.
“Thank you”, they both said to the bartender as he served their wine.
The young man took a sip out of his wine, looked around a bit, and brought out his phone. She took her glance his way as she acknowledged him for the first time. He’s dark-skinned with a stubble scattered around his chin, looks fit in his blue shirt, he probably works out, she thought. He had a crease on his forehead as he went through his phone. He stopped a bit and caught her staring. She quickly looked away but he chuckled at her embarrassment.
” I knew you were staring, I could feel your eyes digging into my skin”
“No, I wasn’t staring, don’t be too forward. Fine men aren’t forward”.
“I’m not being forward. You think I’m a fine man? Oh great! Coming from a beautiful lady like yourself I’m flattered. Thank you”.
She put her hand over her face when she realized she had just complimented him when she didn’t intend to, so she tried defending herself.
“Don’t flatter yourself, I didn’t mean it that way, you looked a bit worried. I just wanted to make you feel better”.
“Aww! So you were concerned about a total stranger like me, you believed that I looked fine even in my worried state and complimented me just so I’ll feel better?
Oh, dear! You’re far too kind “, he replied placing his right hand over his chest as to mock like it was heart touching.
She looked at him and then smiled at his attempt at humour.
“Oh, now you think I’m funny? She thinks I’m fine and funny! I’m blessed”
It made her smile even wider. “I’m glad you’re smiling”, he said in a warm tone.
“Apologies for my initial reaction, . I’m usually not rude”. She said apologizing to him.
“Well, I’ll only accept that apology when you tell me your name. I’m Matthias Ejoh by the way”, he said.
“Hi Matthias, I’m Uwana Amah”, she said gracefully while stretching her hand out for a handshake.
He stood with her hand in his, pulled her off the stool gently so they were both standing and kissed the back of her hand.
” What a pleasure to make your acquaintance Uwana”.
