Tyson Fury Wins Deontay Wilder In KO

Fury scored a definitive seventh-round TKO, and he is now the WBC Heavyweight Champion.

The second Deontay Wilder’s butt hit the canvas for the first time in the third round of his World Heavyweight Championship bout with Tyson Fury, the narrative surrounding the future of the wider heavyweight division shifted dramatically. Sure, boxing fans had to watch three more rounds, of Wilder, with an eardrum suspected ruptured and his legs akin to that of a newborn Giraffe’s as a result, vainly trying and failing to defend himself, but all it did was ram a point home: boxing had a new king. A gypsy king.

Yet, as cathartic an end that it proved for fans of Fury, questions were already being asked to make sense of what the future of the heavyweight crown looked like with such a dominant Fury on top. What had gone wrong for Wilder? Will he ever be able to regain the momentum that, up until then, had many calling him the most dominant force in boxing? More importantly, what next for the new champion?

A few things remain beyond doubt, one being that Tyson Fury, as it stands right now, is the best heavyweight in the world, and will be regarded almost universally as such. The legacy of Wilder, who packed on weight in an effort to physically dominate Fury at the cost of his trademark speed, has a far cloudier future, and it’ll almost certainly go down in the history books that, should he get another shot at the Gypsy King and fail to reclaim his belt, his reign is probably over.

With both of those points comes a certain degree of clarity. But boxing is a forever fragmented sport, one where multiple would-be rulers make different claims to different crowns.

We’re far from the times when the likes of Ali, Frazier and Tyson walked the earth as undisputed masters of the sport, and it’s something that long-time fans of the sport crave. The question now sits as to the three horses that sit at the front of the race to be named the most dominant champion since the days of Vitaly Kitschko, and whether or not we’ll even see them come to blows.

There are multiple timelines that could feasibly pan out in the not-too-distant future of the heavyweight division, some more likely than others, and all revolving around the same three fighters: Fury, Wilder, and British holder of the heavyweight division’s other main belts, Anthony Joshua.

Much has been made of the argument that Joshua, who recently fought a cautions, meticulous win against a far-out-of-shape Andy Ruiz, will never be able to claim the kind of domineering legacy he seeks until he fights either Fury or Wilder. Many also think that Joshua, should he come up against either of them in what would undoubtedly be a huge bout, would probably come up short, and there’s speculation that AJ has been actively avoiding a fight against Wilder in particular for some time now. ”

He could have been here tonight,” Fury told iFL TV after his win. “But he didn’t. I took the chance. I came over here. I took over America and that’s it.”

That wasn’t the only shot Fury levelled at Joshua. During the fight he wore a Nigerian-themed mouthguard – a clear nod to AJ’s heritage.

The problem of teeing up what most people seem to want now: a British superfight unifying the belts, is that the Brit’s short-term future is already all but set in stone. In June, he’s most likely to take on the mandatory contender to his WBA, IBF and WBO belts in Kubrat Pulev.

Even so, it’s all but certain that Fury’s next match will be yet another bout against the man he just beat. It was reported that Wilder has 30-days to activate a ‘trilogy clause’ in his contract, guaranteeing him a rematch to reclaim his belts. Fury also acknowledged this, telling reporters: “He is a warrior, he will be back, he will be a champion again. But I will say, the king has returned to the top of the throne.
