Serie A to resume June 15 despite Corona Virus Pandemic

The Italian top flight will be returning after its suspension due to the Corona virus outbreak. The Serie A has been on hold since March 9 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The teams begin group training on Monday 18 May after receiving clearance by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. The announcement was during a press conference on Saturday, as part of suggestions towards the commencement of league football.

Although, play will not be resuming until safety guarantees are meet. The authorities reveal on Monday that June 15 is the earliest date for the restart.

The FIGC’s decision is in alignment with that of the Italian government, with a prime ministerial decree suspending “sporting events and competitions of all types and disciplines, in public or private places” until June 14 as part of “urgent measures to contain the contagion throughout the national territory”.

The confirmed cases recorded in Italy is about 226,000, with 32,007 deaths recorded and 127,000 recovered cases.

Italy recorded 145 deaths in the past 24 hours, its lowest since the outbreak in March.

As the teams return to training this week, two of Parma players have tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday. While Inter Milan have announced that all their players and coaching staffs tested negative for the virus.

There are 12 weeks left to the Serie A campaign with Juventus sitting top of the table. Lazio are one-point behind in second place while, Inter are a further eight points adrift in third place.

The footballing season has been cancelled in Belgium, Netherlands and France and Scotland. Although, other top division are optimistic of restarting despite the pandemic.

The German Bundesliga has restarted over the weekend becoming the first major league to play games since the suspension. Meanwhile, the Serie A, La Liga and Premier League are eyeing a return.

UEFA president is expecting the conclusion of the season, including the Champions League and Europa League campaign.

“We have an idea but we have to wait for the executive committee of UEFA to confirm the dates. I can say that the European season will be complete, if everything is as it is now, in August,”.

“As things look now, I’m sure that we can finish the European season and this means UEFA competitions.”
