Football stars are making effort to combat the corona virus pandemic. Some of donated cash to support the fight against COVID-19 while others their properties. Below are a few of them:
GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM FOOTBALLERS
German national team football Stars said Wednesday they would donate 2.5 million euros (US$2.7 million) to help fight the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Other players such as Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka and Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Matthias Ginter also posted similar videos.
The players did not specify what form the donation would take, but they directed their followers to the online platform “Wir Helfen”, which aims to coordinate volunteers across Germany during the crisis.
“There was very quick agreement on the fact that we wanted to make a gesture as a team,” said national team director Oliver Bierhoff at a German Football Association (DFB) press conference on Wednesday.
He said that Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan, Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen were also among those who came up with the idea.
The Polish striker follows in the footsteps of his teammates Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich in throwing substantial financial support behind the cause.
ROBERT AND ANNA LEWANDOWSKI
Goretzka and Kimmich recently established their own campaign against coronavirus, called ‘We Kick Corona’, in order to raise funds for important charities and social institutions.
The Lewandowski’s generous donation matches the total that Goretzka and Kimmich spent to kickstart the campaign, and represents a shared commitment towards beating the virus.
The campaign has incentivised fellow professionals to offer financial donations. Manchester City’s Leroy Sane among others have since pledged support.
To reinforce their determination further, Robert and Anna Lewandowski appeared keen to issue an important message of hope and solidarity, in order to unify others behind the cause.
Speaking to the German newspaper Bild, they articulated their desire to see people come together and sacrifice what they can to help facilitate a successful return to normal life.
“We are all aware of the difficult situation around us”, they said.
SEDIO MANE
Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has made a donation of 30 millions FCFA – around 45,000 euros (£41,000) – to the national committee fighting against coronavirus in his home country of Senegal.
The Reds’ player decided to make the donation “spontaneously when he saw the evolution of the situation” with the increase of Covid-19 cases in Senegal, his agent said.
Mane also shared a video on social media where he asked his compatriots to take coronavirus “extremely seriously”.
The 2019 Caf African player of the year also gave his followers advice on preventive measures to apply like “disinfect or wash your hands for at least 30 seconds”.
The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Senegal has reached 27, but two of the them have returned to health, according to the Ministry of Health.
Senegalese officials announced Monday the suspension of flights between the West African country and several countries in Europe (France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Italy) and in the Northern Africa (Algeria, Tunisia) while Morocco already announced the suspension of flights with Senegal.
All activities at Melwood training ground for Liverpool’s players and staff have been stopped, and, as Liverpool is a Premier League club, their fixtures have been postponed until at least 4 April, when they will be reviewed.
In the meantime, Mane and his teammates have been training using individual programmes.
