FASHION and our society

Through the busy streets of Port Harcourt, also through social media interactions with random Nigerians. Thoughts on fashion, its meaning and significance to the average Nigerian were sampled.

Replies such as:

“Fashion is a form of expression”

“Fashion is an identification, the first introduction to one’s personality”

“Fashion is an avenue to be yourself”

Were the most famous answers amongst individuals. People shared an almost unified opinion that fashion is a form of expression, personality mirror and generally a be-yourself tool.

However, this particular answer stood out

“Fashion is freedom, it is an avenue to break free from the norm and just do you no matter what anyone has to say…It is Art, the interpretation of your thoughts without the interference of anyone or anything”

FREEDOM, a sense of liberty to be oneself.

The society we live in however, gives little or no room for freedom. This is demonstrated, as most individuals questioned about the infusion of their own personality into their outfits gave answers that further displayed the non-existence of a sense of style. This is as a result of conformity to the norms of the society, observance to what is socially acceptable as a stray from this will attract judgement and assassination of character. In other words an orthodox approach to fashion.

Fashion should be a tool for expression , a display of likeness for one’s self. Rita Mae Brown once said

” The reward of conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself”.

So, take a moment, imagine a society where people are not judged or discriminated against. A society where tolerance and respect is the practice. People will be able to discover themselves through fashion, be able to express it, hence grow to be better versions of themselves, free from judgements, discrimination, bully and hatred.

Graceful and Colourful is the society where different personalities are allowed to shine through as opposed to one where we all look and dress the same. Individuality being the intent of it all.

Word! For me, fashion is not what you wear but how you wear it. Your confidence and poise stand out. People should be allowed to express themselves through their outfits.

This is nice…
Fashion in this part of the world isn’t total freedom. I agree. It’s more about looking for a way to blend your personality with the accepted dress modes and still find a way to stand out.
For instance, I cannot wear face caps because my family think it makes you look irresponsible.
I love this article.
