Following the 1–3 loss to Real Madrid at home in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie last night and the shock 1–4 loss to Brentford on the weekend; Chelsea has now lost two consecutive matches at home in all competitions for the first time this season, conceding seven goals in the process after conceding just five in previous ten matches.

How it started.

Chelsea has had a good run-in at the beginning of the season; winning ten of their fourteen matches at the start of the season. With one loss and three draws, they were top of the table at the start of December. They were the strong favourite to win the 2021/2022 premier league crown. With two wins, four draws and two losses in their next eight matches, they sit currently in the third position. Having lost grounds in the title race to last season’s champions Manchester City and Liverpool in second place.

What went wrong

Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, was sanctioned by the UK government in March. This is due to his strong ties with Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Freezing his assets and giving the club a special license to continue its operation. The club will be expecting new ownership in the coming weeks. There were a series of solid performances in the face of privation facing the club and its owner.  The team has been confident, reaching the semi-final of the FA Cup and quarter-finals of the Champions League. But could the pressure of these events already catch up with the team thereby affecting their Morale? Considering the manner of their last two losses. 

How things stands

Chelsea currently occupies the third position with five points above fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur and fifth-place Arsenal, with the same points. Although, having played one match less than Tottenham and the same number of matches as Arsenal. With the competition for the last champion’s league spot getting even fiercer, could Chelsea find themselves in the fight for champion’s league places?

Having lost the first leg of their champion’s league quarter-final tie at home to Real Madrid and still having the fellow top four Contenders Arsenal, West Ham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Manchester United to play in their remaining Premier League fixtures. Could this be the end of their dream for European football next season and their champion’s league defense or can they get their season back on track when they play away to Southampton this weekend and produce a champions League comeback in their away tie-in Madrid next week?
