Ahead of Chelsea’s semi finals second leg against Real Madrid, Raphael Varane is set to miss the Champions League semi-final second leg with injury.
Raphael Varane picked up abductor injury in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Osasuna on Saturday. It is possible that the centre-back could be replaced by Sergio Ramos, who is fit to return after a month on the sidelines. Marcelo is also set to be available for Spanish side.
Real Madrid will also be without Dani Carvajal due to the hamstring injury he suffered during the first leg last week, with the right-back set to miss the rest of the season.
Zinedine Zidane could also be without Federico Valverde, who has not played since the 0-0 draw at Liverpool on April 14 after being diagnosed with coronavirus.
Marcelo is also set to be available for the Spanish side, despite being selected to work in a polling station during regional elections in Madrid on Tuesday.
Real drew 1-1 with Chelsea in the first leg in Madrid, meaning they must better that score in west London on Wednesday if they are to reach their first final since 2018.
Chelsea’s current manager, Thomas Tuchel gives an injury update on Chelsea’s duo Mateo Kovacic and Antonio Rudiger ahead of the clash as well.
He had this to say this about Kovacic’s injury:
“Now we have a little setback with him. I don’t want to be too negative. Let’s see how he feels tomorrow.”
Adding on that, he was confident of having Antonio Rudiger back for the crucial tie.
“Toni got injured in the last minute of the Madrid game. I am quite positive for (him being available) for Wednesday.”
Chelsea hold a slim advantage from the first leg at the Valdebebas. The aggregate score stands at 1-1 but Chelsea have the away goal to their advantage. Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the 14th minute and Karim Benzema levelled things in the 29th minute after which an even second-half ensued.
Nonetheless, Chelsea have been in fine fettle over the last few weeks as they dispatched Fulham with relative ease in the league. There were two notable absentees from the game due to injury.
This is the first time in years since the Blues have gotten to the semi finals of the champions league. And they’ll be hoping to secure their place in the final for the first since 2012.
