INTERVIEW GONE SOAR – EYES ON THE NURSE

“Excuse me! Excuse me!” She said as she hurriedly try to locate the reception. “Calm down, madam”, a nurse at the reception tries to help her relax.

“Good day”, she said to the nurse panting. “My son was admitted at the late hours of the morning”

“He was said to have difficulties speaking and, I… I received a call that…” she stammered.

“What’s his name, please?” asked the nurse interrupting her from explaining further.

“Jonny”, she answered swiftly. “John Ugo-chukwu”, she pronounced.

“Please go to Admissions”, the nurse replied after checking her records. “First floor, right turn”. she added.

“Thank you,” Azimoon said as she hurries to locate the hall.

Her eyes couldn’t stop searching for an inscription that reads “Admission” as she exited the elevator.

She couldn’t stop wondering what could be wrong with her son, until she located the hall. She hurriedly approached the entrance and opened the door. There he was; been attended to by a nurse.

“Jonny!” She hollered. (Rushing into the room where he was admitted)

“Are you okay?”

“What happened?” She asked. There were so many questions she wanted to ask all at once.

“I am fine, mom!” “I am okay. There is nothing to be worried about.” He tried to calm her down.

She was so worried that she didn’t notice the nurse standing beside the bed, until the sound of a voice as pleasant as that of a common nightingale fell on her eardrums. It was as though she purring “Halleluyah Chorus” in a concert.

“Good day, madam!” “I am Hannah”, said the nurse.

“Good day, Hannah! And thank you for taking care of him”.

“It’s my job”, she responded.

“I will leave you two for now. Results from diagnoses carried out on him will soon be out”.

“Thank you”, Jonny said as she exited their presence.

“What happened honey?” Azimoon asked.

John narrated how he boarded a bus from the bus-stop and highlighted at Brantley Road where he took a walk to the Consulate.

He was feeling well, he narrated. “I entered the building, approached the receptionist, and introduced myself as well as my reasons for being there. She offered me a chair to sit and wait for the director.”

“It was about 20mins into my wait for the director that I started having this abnormal feeling”.

“You’re normal”, Azimoon interrupted. They both laughed and he continued.

“It started with a slight headache. I asked the receptionist for a glass of water and she pointed at the Water Dispenser, because she was on the phone and couldn’t respond verbally. I helped myself and returned to sit for another 10mins, but it was getting worse”.

“I noticed the headache was left-sided. Soon, I started feeling weak, my muscles fatigue, and that was when the secretary called that the director was ready to see me. I stood up reluctantly and followed her as she led me to his office”.

While he was still talking, the nurse walked in.

“Hello, John! How do you feel now?”

“I’m feeling better”, he responded smartly.

“Good!” She said. “Your test results are out. Mrs…”, (trying to pronounce her name) “Azimoon”, John’s mother quickly responded. “You can call me Azimoon”. “Okay”, the nurse responded. “The doctor will love to have a word with you in his office”.

“Sure”, Azimoon replied as she stood up to follow the nurse.

“I will be back honey…” his mom said “I will be fine, mom”, John quickly interrupted as he presumed she was heading the usual routine of treating him “like a kid”. He didn’t want that, especially not “in front of Hannah”.

He lay properly on the bed as he watched them leave the hall.

Anxiously waiting for his mom to return, He got bored and slept off…
