Campus Tales: Episode 7 (RAT INVASION)

RAT INVASION

Lectures were going on fine, though checkered by some oddities and stress here and there. Every single lecturer that came to class had his own recommended texts, making the books we needed shoot really high.

They were also really good at their job, and delivered their lessons expertly. This, I enjoyed most about each class.

I got home from school quite early, and was at the verge of stepping into my room, after opening the door, when I noticed something ropy, black and shiny crawl swiftly into my wardrobe.

I froze!

Was that a snake? I asked, alarmed.

My heart was beating fast, my mouth felt dry, and my feet were almost failing me for fear. There was a small garden behind the house. But was it possible for it to house animals of this sort?

Suddenly, I heard something move slowly close to my cloth box, that lay beside my bed.

Oh God!

What if this serpent crawls into my bed, or somewhere hidden, and comes out while I’m fast asleep?

Worst of all, there was no one around. It was just me, and the serpent.

Luckily, there was power supply and so I quickly turned on the light, went behind the door, and pulled out my mob stick. All these, without taking my eyes off where my supposed prey was.

Just how, did this animal get in? I kept asking.

I offered a little prayer, then charged cautiously towards

it.

I hated snakes, and probably they hated me too. So our feud was understandable. What ever happened next, depended on our individual skills and wits. Possibly, this was one of their warriors, sent to write me off. But I was not ready to let that happen.

Slowly and steadily, I tiptoed towards it, shaking and sweating for fear of how I’d react if it was a cobra or any other poisonous snake, and what would happen if it suddenly sprang up at me.

Beads of perspiration were continually dropping from my forehead, and some rolled down my back and chest. My mouth, was still feeling dry.

I heard the movement again. It was so, so creepy. I started recalling some of the scenes in the horror movies I’d seen a week ago. What if there were more?

But they couldn’t be more! I assured myself, if not, I’d have sensed their movement on my red rose designed carpeted floor, which now looked blood red.

I thought of leaving the housing and sleeping over with my friend at least for the night, then coming back the next day with reinforcement to kill it. But what if this messenger of doom disappeared, or worse, hid itself in a more dangerous place?

No way!

I’d face this. I resolved, and summoned up all the courage in me.

I got close to the box, and poked it with the mob stick, with the hope of seeing the animal crawl out for me to smash its head. But nothing happened.

With the stick raised in my right hand, I used my left to pull back the box. While peering over it.

Suddenly, there was a very swift movement. Out of fear, I hysterically banged the box, and the floor surrounding it, but didn’t hit anything. I kept hitting the box till I realized there was actually nothing there.

I moved over to the next box, where I felt it ran to, since I heard more movements from underneath the box, and was about to shift it, with my right hand raised, when suddenly, the lights went off!

No power supply.

Everywhere was dark.

Without hesitation. I swiftly retreated, colliding into my table, falling to the ground with all the books that were on it, up again, and tumbling back down as I stepped on a slippery polythene. I bashed my torso so hard as I fell the second time, but I didn’t feel a thing, as my whole being was continually pumped with adrenaline. My heart rate increased the more as I heard the movement again while retreating.  I feared it was behind me, probably trying to have a bite at my poor leg.

I went hysterical, shouting away.

On getting to the door, I turned swiftly with the stick raised, in a bid to strike what ever creature was behind me.

Everywhere was dark, but I could see with the help of the moonlight that crept into the room through the window.

Lo and behold, there it was, scrambling by a corner, looking for were to escape.

I guess during my retreat, I startled it and made it come out of hiding. But unfortunately, it got itself trapped.

There, in the corner, with it’s tail pressed down by my dictionary, making it almost impossible for it to escape on its own, scrambled the dreaded animal.

There, in the tight corner, close to my box and my shoes, lay the small squeaking little  rat!

A rat?

I exclaimed, annoyed at myself.

“How could you be so stupid, man?” I ask aloud. “All these while, you’ve been scared of a tiny hairy rat?” I asked, with my hands on my head.

With annoyance, I moved to where my lamp was, turned it on, picked up the stick I was with and went ferociously to where my prey was.

The tables were turned.

I was now the predator.

On getting to it, I noticed that the black and tiny stuff I saw earlier, was a wet shoe lace, that got tangled with its tiny feet.

I looked into its tiny infant eyes, and almost felt pity.

Its eyes were pitch black, and reflected the light from my lamb. They were truly dazzling.

But no way!

Its kind was responsible for destroying one of my books back home.

And here I was just about a month and some weeks in my new apartment, and this creature came visiting.

If I let it go, it may come back with reinforcement. So, I must show no mercy.

With that resolution, the poor rat pleaded guilty, and I gave it an opportunity to say its last words before smashing its tiny skull four times.

There was a little splash of blood at the first hit. The rat struggled a bit, but after the second, third, and fourth hit, it went completely still.

I gave it a befitting burial, before getting back in, to treat my own wounds from the fall.

Then, power supply came back.

What a night!
