The annual Delta State School Sports Festival on Monday started at various centres in the state with 2,970 students competing for honours.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary School Education, Patrick Ukah, said he was optimistic that some fresh talents would be discovered at the fiesta.
“There are so many talents on parade. I am so proud of this event and we want the people of the state to come out and encourage these young athletes.
“Some of the athletes in this competition will also represent the state at the National Sports Festival in Edo State next week.”
Already, the Local Organising Committee for the event said the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba will be the busiest of the centres.
According to the LOC, athletics (track and field) will take place inside the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, athletics (throws) will hold inside Asaba Girls’ Grammar School, Asaba, chess and scrabble will take place at the Media Centre of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, just as the indoor sports hall of the stadium will host to badminton and table tennis.
The 2020 school sports features 11 sports organized in 3 categories, Primary, Junior and Secondary schools respectively. it is organised in 4 levels, school, local government, zone and the state final.
The Governor of the state Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa is to be thanked for his support for the ministry for sports development in the state.
